Information meeting “Current issues in the maritime business”On 22 November 2017, in the context of the event “Current issues in the maritime business”, which was organised by the Chamber of Trade (IHK) Emden, Anne Mdinaradze, analyst at Berlin Economics, held a talk on the topic “The ‘Belt and Road Initiative’: An assessment from three perspectives”.
After providing some key information about the initiative, she described the regional structure of Chinese exports. Based on that, she gave an assessment of the BRI from the Chinese and European (EU+EFTA) perspective as well as from the perspective of transit countries. Mrs. Mdinaradze came to the conclusion that the BRI offers chances, like the expansion of trade due to infrastructure improvements or the integration of transit countries into global value chains. However, she also indicated that the initiative entails certain risks related mainly to the Chinese dominance and the overlapping of geostrategic and economic motivations.
